CRAFTS COUNCIL DEVELOPMENT AWARD - Call for Applicants

The Crafts Council has successfully relaunched its flagship support programme. Formerly known as the "Setting Up Scheme", the Crafts Council Development Award is now seeking applications from designer makers.

GUEST POTTER/ MEMBERSHIP:POTTERS, BRISTOL

This marketing co-operative based in Bristol is seeking new ceramics and ceramic sculpture to exhibit in its high profile shop. Its £Guest Potter£ programme involves exhibiting work of selected applicants for a mutually agreed period of 1 or more months. POTTERS also welcome applications from professional potters, ceramists and sculptors for membership in the co-operative.

POTTERS is a unique shop providing since 1996 an enormous range of hand crafted ceramics, both decorative and functional, and ceramic sculpture made by professional craftspeople of England and Wales. .

A.I.R Vallauris France Residency

Located in the heart of the old town of Vallauris, the non-profit Association A.I.R. Vallauris (Artists in Residence) welcomes international artists from all horizons to meet and collaborate with local artists and to research and create new work in an artistic laboratory created specifically for them.

The Association encourages and facilitates interaction between local artists and international artists. Workshops, conferences, demonstrations exhibitions are organized with the resident artists. These events are open to the public. Through partnerships with the local School of Fine Arts, the local government, and international organizations a sensibility of exchange between the public, artists, and international is realized.

The application deadline is October 15th. We encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible as the date of submission may be used to determine time-slot priority.

XV Earth & Fire ceramics fair
Applications are now invited from CPA Associate Members to share a Group Stand at next years fair which will once again be held in the beautiful grounds of Rufford Country Park.

Selection of four Associates will take place at Rufford during November - December. Results in early January 2009.

Stand Cost: If selected the cost will be £65 (non - refundable). This cost includes table covering, packing materials, a profile in the full-colour earth & fire catalogue and also in CPA News.

Selection fee (non-refundable): £5 - cheques made payable to Craft Potters Association.
This is a group stand: All applicants should be prepared to share the duties of looking after the stand throughout the fair, equally.

Ten - Commissions for Designer Makers

To celebrate the ten year anniversary of Bilston Craft Gallery becoming a craft dedicated venue, we will be commissioning 15 - 20 makers to produce new work, the results of which will be exhibited in the gallery.

We are looking for makers in all craft disciplines producing high quality, innovative work.

Commissions to be undertaken November 2008 - February 2009 and the exhibition will be on show 30 May - 22 August 2009.

Call to Artists and Makers for Public Art Commission

Expressions of intereest are sought by 78 Derngate, Northampton from artists and makers for a proposed public artwrok for the atrium of the contemporary extension by John McAslan architects.

78 Derngate: The Charles Rennie Mackintosh House & Galleries is a dramatically remodelled towmhouse by the great Glasgow designer and architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and is the only example of his interior design work outside Scotland.

The commission fee is £12,000 and the project is to be completed by July 2009. Please submit a (PC Compatible) CD with 10 images of your work, a CV Short Statement (Max 500 words) about your pratice (written or audio) and why you are interested in the commission. Three makers and artists will be shortlisted and a fee of £500 will be paid to each work up a proposal.

The 1st Australian Ceramics Triennale (formerly the National Ceramics Conference) at Sydney, Australia

The 1st Australian Ceramics Triennale (formerly the National Ceramics Conference) will be held in Sydney, Australia from 17th July £ 20th July, 2009. Facing the Future will focus on the relationship between contemporary ceramic practice and the emergence of diverse social, cultural and technological global forces.

We invite individual papers or suggestions for panels on any aspect of The 2009 Australian Ceramics Triennale£s three broad themes £ Facing Asia, Future Practice and Activate / Cultivate. The theme Facing Asia will focus on contemporary ceramics practice in the Asia-Pacific region and its recent global impact. Future Practice aims to identify potential trends within the ceramics discipline by concentrating on the work of emerging practitioners, hybrid and merging praxis, new technologies and materials, and evolving environmental and ethical concerns. The Activate / Cultivate theme seeks to address educational, community, specialisms and local trends in ceramics and its discourses, and provide professional and grassroots support to the practitioner, collector and educator.

Suggested topics include:

* Alternative sites/sights: working outside the mainstream, outsider art, community art
* Politics and Place: the changing world of global ceramics, the affect of place on individual practice, social and ethical consequences of ceramic production
* Education Trends: institutional trends, ceramics in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, art as therapy, mentors, master/apprentice
* Hybrid Practices: practitioners using ceramics within an expanded field of visual arts
* New Technologies: their incorporation into the ceramic medium and process, the social and philosophical affect on studio practice
* Individual Voices: artist talks about individual and collaborative studio practices
* Clay and Text: critiques, reviews and meditations on the spoken and written discourse surrounding contemporary ceramics practice in the last decade

After visiting our website, interested parties should address the above themes, however issues relevant to contemporary ceramics that fall outside the major themes will also be considered.

Peer Reviewed Papers
Each paper will be blind reviewed by two reviewers, drawn from the conference organising committee and others selected by the conference organisers.

General Papers (Non-refereed papers)
These papers must still meet normal presentation standards and address the broad conference themes. They will be selected based on relevance to conference themes and suitability to the program.

Please send initially a brief abstract of 250 words and a short biography of no more than 150 words as a single attached Word doc. by email to info@australianceramicstriennale.com. Each abstract should have a cover sheet containing the following: title of paper; name of author(s); address; full contact details. The author£s name should not appear on the abstract itself.

If you are proposing a panel the abstract should be 500 words and include a short biography of each panelist. The abstract should fully summarise the paper's arguments. It should not be an introduction. Abstracts should be received no later than 31st October, 2008

Abstracts for peer assessment will be blind peer assessed and applicants notified of the results by 15th January, 2009. Applicants for General Papers will be notified by 31st January, 2009. Successful applicants must submit completed papers by 30th April, 2009. The organizing committee is presently exploring options for publication and further information will be available when confirmed.

The Contemporary Craft Fair

Applications are now being sought from designer makers resident in Britain and Ireland working to the highest standard in ceramics, glass, textiles, Jewellery, silver, metal, wood, plastics, mix media, leather, recycled materials and paper. No paintings, photography or musical instruments.

With 5 years firmly under our belt, The Contemporary Craft Fair, in association with the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, has become one of the largest and most prestigious shows to be part of in the UK.

The lively, festival atmosphere at The Contemporary Craft Fair has built up a loyal following and we represent 160 of the UK's finest designer makers. Our additional on-site educational programme includes demonstrations, workshops for all ages, masterclasses and lectures by some of the UK's leading names. International Residency Fellowship 2009

When:1st April - 30 August 2009
International ceramicists are invited to apply for a three month residency at Fireworks Clay Studios, Cardiff, Wales, UK.
The residency will culminate in an exhibition at the National Museum of Wales with a piece of work gifted to the permanent collection.

This year during the two days of the Pottery Market a lot of participative workshops will take place such as Clay-Therapy, A Wheel Thrown Plates Competition, the Firing of the 'City in Flames' and many others. The Celr£ Municipal Corporation will carry out an extensive publicity campaign which we feel that coinciding with the Easter Holidays will attract a good number of the interested public.

The 2009 Holmfirth Art Week

When:5 July - 11 July 2009
Holmfirth artWEEK 2008 will be open to all artists, amateur and professional. Each person may submit up to two pieces £ there is no selection process for the public entries but space is limited, and the Exhibition is always over-subscribed, so a draw is held to select each year's exhibitors.
This year's draw will take place on Thu 30 April 2009 and applications will be accepted fromWed 1 April 2009.
Applications can only be accepted if accompanied by a cheque for £5 (payable to 'Holmfirth artWEEK') and a large (preferably C5* size) stamped, self-addressed envelope.

* C5 size takes an A4 sheet folded in half - 23cm x 16cm.
There is no application form for this part of the process and details about the work to be submitted aren£t required at this stage (sending photos is not necessary).

If your application is succesful you will receive instructions in the first week of May about submitting your work; if your name is not drawn your cheque will be returned. If you aren't lucky this time please try again next year.

The 2009 Zelli Porcelain Award

When: October 2009

Artists will be invited to enter works of porcelain sculpture based on a set theme.
Short-listed entries wil be judged by a panel of experts.
The winner will receive a prize of £3000.

Additionally for October 2009.

The set theme will be 'Proverbs', and artists will be able to choose from eight examples for their work.
There will also be a prize of £500 for the sculpruew showing the best use of colour.
